WOMEN ON THE MOVE: LIC WORKING WOMEN’S CONVENTION CHENNAI DIVISION II

The 17th LIC Working Women’s Convention of ICEU Chennai Division-II, held on 8.1.2011 at LIC Canteen Hall, Mount Road, got off to a brilliant start with songs by CBO-13 comrades, followed by the play “Kanavugalin Maranam “ (Death of the Dream) a thought provoking and creative performance “on denial of higher education to downtrodden people in this society” by the cultural troupe of Chennai Division II, which kept the audience in rapt attention. S S Geetha, Joint Convenor Chennai division –II, welcomed the gathering. 236 women comrades out of the total 275 women comrades in the division, attended the Convention.

The Convention was addressed by the Chief Guest K Balabarathy, CPI(M) MLA of Dindigual constituency. She praised the splendid contribution and committed involvement of women cadres of Chennai Division - II, who work in the forefront along with other progressive forces for national development. She also appreciated the role of women sub-committees in extending social activities. R. Sarvamangala, Convenor, submitted the report and four comrades participated in the debate on it. K. Swaminathan, Gen. Secy., SZIEF, while greeting the Convention, highlighted the activities performed by women comrades of Chennai Division II and also suggested that the Convention should take a decision to campaign for food security, education, the importance of health, and that comrades should come forward to work along with the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradiction Front TNUEF for the eradication of untouchability in society. S. Revathy, Convenor of women sub-committee, Chennai Division - i also greeted the convention.

The Convention unanimously adopted resolutions on 33% reservation, against FDI hike in the insurance sector, against sexual harassment, etc. K. Manoharan, Gen. Secy, ICEU, D.O.II summed up the debate and the report was adopted unanimously. A new sub-committee was formed with Sarvamangala as Convenor and Gomathy, Geetha, Anuja, Lakshmi, Uma Maheswari, Gowri and Thulasi as Joint Convenors. The conference concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by V. Lakshmi, Joint Convenor.
