WOMEN TRADE UNION CAMP AT GUWAHATI

As part of celebration of the Centenary Year of International Women’s Day and the diamond jubilee year of AIIEA, the Women Sub-committee of the Gauhati Division Insurance Employees Association organized a trade union camp at the DTC Hall, LIC I, Guwahati on 18th December 2010. Sixty women LIC employees participated enthusiastically in the camp.

The subject for discussion in the camp was “Trade Union movement and working women in the backdrop of the Centenary Year of International Women’s Day”. Satanjib Das, President, Eastern Zone Insurance Employees Association (EZIEA) who was the main speaker, narrated the history of the working women’s movement from early part of the 19th century to the era of imperialist driven neo liberal globalisation. He stressed the need for a united movement of men and women, for an exploitation free society. He opined that only socialism can provide a society where the emancipation of women is possible.

Bhabendra Kr. Kalita, General Secretary, GDIEA also appealed to the women employees to strengthen the united movement against the neo-liberal economic policy of the Government.

At the outset a minute’s silence was observed to pay homage to Pappa Umanath, founder leader of All India Democratic Women Association, noted folk singer Rameswar Pathak and actress Abha Hazarika.
