KERALA: KERALA STATE TU CLASS FOR WORKING WOMEN

The Kerala state co-ordination committee of working women, (CITU) organized a two day TU. class for working women on 13th and 14th November 2010 at EMS Academy, Vilappilsala, Thiruvanabthapuram.

The 102 participants, representing all the districts, who reached Academy at 9.30 am on 13th November included ASHAs, Anganwadi workers, Artisans, Beedi workers, Plantation, Cashew, Fishers, School mid day meal workers, KSEB, KSTA, Water Authority, KSEB officers, Co-op employees BSNL, State and Central government employees and lawyers. Sheela Rozario presided and V.V.Presenna Kumari gave the welcome speech.

P.K.Gurudasan (Minister for Labour) inaugurated the two day camp. He briefly analyzed the results of the recent elections to the local bodies. Referring to the Obama visit, he said that a nation should conduct trade to help its people. Unfortunately, our prime minister is subordinating India as a strategic partner of America.

Speaking on “Welfare measures and Labour Laws”, Gurudasan pointed out that the Unorganized Sector Social Security Act was being implemented only in Kerala. The Central government is not ready to give even 1% of GDP to the unorganized workers sector, but the state government. has allocated 3% of its GDP for unorganized sector workers. He gave a detailed picture of various welfare measures implemented in Kerala. Minimum wages have been increased in 38 sectors. In all other sectors minimum wages will be reviewed in this financial year itself. Women workers in the unorganized sector will be given 12 weeks wages during maternity leave. Central government schemes like Comprehensive Health Insurance are being implemented in Kerala, to include 35 lakh families and covering almost all unorganized workers.

The second class was on “ Present day Capitalist crisis”. Shaju Antony, Secretary BEFI, presented the subject in simple language, so that everybody could follow the global crisis from 1930 to the current crisis, and spoke on how to strengthen class struggle. The participants raised many questions to which clarifications were given.

After that K.O.Habeeb presented the topic “History of CITU and organization”. and detailed the entire history and struggles of the Indian working class prior to and after the formation of CITU.

The next class was on “Trade union and working women – working women a class perspective” by V.V.Presennakumari. There was a very good interaction in this class. Printed notes containing CITU commission papers and Com Umanath’s note, were given to all participants.

In the evening, aftermeals, the participants gathered and presented various cultural items which were enjoyed by everyone. Even senior comrades participated in the singing and dancing. On 14th November Dr. Thomas Isaac (Minister for Finance) presented the topic “Capitalist exploitation”. He explained how exploitation was not visible in the capitalist system, unlike in the earlier slavery or feudal systems.

After this Ravindranath, President, Kerala state committee of CITU, presented a paper – on “Revolutionary trade union-ideological questions”.

The last class was on “A hundred years of struggles – IWD Centenary”, presented by A.P.Lovely.. A note on the topic was circulated to the participants.

In the feedback session Thulasi Teacher, Sreedevi (LIC), Com Rejani (ASHA) gave their reactions to the various topics presented. Many comrades volunteered to take up the above topics in district level classes.

In conclusion Habeeb stressed that for strengthening CITU it is necessary that working women be trained properly and given responsibilities. K..Savithri gave the vote of thanks.

A meeting of the State CCWW was held on 13th and it was decided to conduct one day district level classes on three topics (1) Present day capitalist crisis (2) History of CITU (3) Working women-a class perspective.

All the participants were very happy to be in the Academy for two days and returned with high spirits and full of confidence.
