“ORGANISE, EDUCATE AND ENROLL CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WORKERS UNDER WELFARE BOARD” - Debanjan Chakrabarti

On 24th, 25th & 26th October 2010 at Kolkata, West Bengal, the 7th National Conference of ‘Construction Workers Federation of India’ (CWFI) was held. The conference area & hall was named in memory of Comrade K.K. Bakshi (Nagar) and Pravat Singh (Manch) respectively.

On 24th October, 2010 at 9.30 A.M. R. Singaravelu, President of CWFI hoisted the CWFI flag and garlanded Martyrs column. Tapan Sen, Raghunath Kusari, Rajdeo Goala, Debanjan Chakrabarti and Office bearers of CWFI and reception committee members and delegates & observers pays tribute to martyrs column with flowers.

Aloke Khastagir and his troop sang inaugural song.

The conference was presided over by a presidium comprised of R. Singaravelu, R. Kotam Raju, B. Madhava, Vijay Misra.

Raghunath Kusari, Chairman, Reception Committee in his welcome address narrated the glimpses of history of struggles of Kolkata, renascence of Kolkata, the city of protest rallies against neo-liberal policies Govt. of India, emergence of Left Front and now fascist attack on Left Front. B. Madhava moves the condolence resolution and silence observed.

Tapan Sen, General Secretary, Centre of Indian Unions (CITU) inaugurating the conference told about the Govt. of India’s attempt to snatch the worker’s rights which they have earned through years of struggles. Against this attack only Leftist Trade Unions are fighting and resisting. He told about the fascist force Trinamool Congress with the help of pseudo left Maoist attacking the Left Parties & Trade Union activists and killing them mercilessly in West Bengal, the strong hold of Left Forces.

He mentioned about the movement against price hike and nation wide strike action at the call of Left Trade Unions and political parties and its tremendous success. He gave a call to the Construction Workers to expand their organisational network throughout India and built up a strongest national Federation in our country.

R. Singeravelu, President of CWFI in his presidential speech talked about international capitalist crisis and its effect on our country. He mentioned about the problems of Indian Economy and how its affects the common man. He gave a call for unity and struggles.

This 7th National Conference was greeted by–

Valentine Pacho, Deputy General Secretary, World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), Dennis Paul Doody & Wilfrid Flynn from Union of Construction, Allied Trades, Technicians (UCATT) U.K., Kozo Kimiaki & KATO BASUO of All Japan Construction Transport and General Workers Union, Abdel Rahaman Maamon and Hassanin of General Trade Union for Building and wood Workers of Egypt. David Sydney Hardman of New Zealand Building Trade Union, Ashley Christopher Borg of Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union (CFMEU) of Australia, Ziogas Konstantinos, of Federation of Construction Workers and Allied Trades of Greece and Mrs Sahana Ferdoushy Lucky of Jatiya Sramik Federation of Bangladesh.

Debanjan Chakrabarti, General Secretary, CWFI placed work report. He mentioned the rising struggles of the working class of different countries of the world and the Indian working class struggles against the neo-liberal policies of the Govt. of India.

He mentioned about the main problems the Indian Construction Workers and what is to be done to resolve those problems. He took up the issue of organisational activities of CWFI in details with a critical approach. He mentioned about the construction worker march to Parliament on 26th September, 2008. It was successful. He mentioned for the first time in India the construction workers alone go on one day national strike on 8th December, 2009 at the call of CWFI, This strike was well responded. More than 9 lakhs workers participated in this strike. He referred about the problems of migrant workers both inter state and inter country. He concluded with tasks ahead of the CWFI to expand organisation net work.

S.B. Karmakar, Treasurer placed his audited accounts of 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009.

37 delegates including 3 women spoke on the G.S. report. Discussion was very good. Comrade Debanjan Charkrabarti replied to the debate. The G.S. report and Accounts was adopted unanimously.

The credential report mentioned – Total delegates 401 and observer-28 attended the conference from 20 States. Out of them 325 are organiser, 119 are workers, and total membership of 9 lakh 14 thousands.

The following resolutions were taken up and passed in the conference:

(1) On Maoist –Trinamool attack against Left Forces in West Bengal

(2) On Price Hike of Essential commodities

(3) On Migrant Workers

(4) In support of 23rd February, 2011 Delhi March at the call all Central Trade Unions

(5) In support of International Struggles in France, Italy, Greece

(6) Resolution on Foxconn Struggle in Tamilnadu.

This conference elected the 130 Working Committee members including 36 office bearers unanimously. Comrade R. Singaravelu as President, Comrade Debanjan Chakrabarti, as General Secretary, Comrade S.B. Karmakar as Treasurer have been re-elected in this conference.
