The following is the press statement issued by the CITU on February 17, 2011
THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) deplores the perverse logic of prime minister of equating subsidy to the poor with windfall gains of the multinational and Indian corporates at the cost of government’s revenue loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore on account of 2G spectrum scam. The prime minister’s much talked about concept of “Growth with equity” obviously does not differentiate between hardships of millions of farmers, unorganised sector workers, agricultural labourers and unemployed persons which gets partially addressed through subsidies in food, fertilisers, kerosene etc with a few corporate majors and fly-by-night operators who have gained from the telecom spectrum scam.
It will be morally hazardous for a welfare state, if such shocking formulation to justify the biggest scam in post-independence India is not questioned and challenged.
The CITU calls upon the working class to give a fitting reply to such atrocious mind-set of the present government towards “aam admi” as reflected in prime minister’s interaction with the electronic media on February 16, 2011 through widespread countrywide united protest.
Such perverse mindset of the government reflects the real face of the priorities of a corporate-captive government bearing ominous portents for the mass of the people and democracy as such.
All the trade unions in the country have already closed their ranks to hold a massive protest demonstration before parliament on February 23 against the grievous fall out of the anti-people policies of the government arising out of such atrocious mindset. The CITU calls upon the working people to mobilise in lakhs to voice their protest.
