WORLD CONGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION WORKERS FEDERATION

15th world Congress of ‘Trade Union International of Workers of the Building, Wood, and Building Materials Industries’ (UITBB) (WFTU) was held at Salvador, Brazil from 6-9th December, 2010.

96 delegates from 31 countries participated in this 15th World Congress. From Construction Workers Federation of India (CITU) Comrade Debanjan Chakrabarti and Comrade N. Veeraswamy attended this world congress.

The policy document presented in the Congress, dealt with the serious economic situation affecting large number of workers in both developing and developed countries. The document noted that during the past four years the UITBB and its affiliates, together with the WFTU, have played an active part in the international movement of solidarity and actions in support of peace on all continents, including events and demonstrations against American aggression and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan, the coup of Honduras, the threats voiced against Iran and North-Korea, the blocade of Cuba and the actions directed at the democratic Government of Venezuela and Bolivia.

UITBB also supported the campaign of solidarity with the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza Strip, and the campaign against the suppression and violation of trade union rights (the ABCC in Australia and the Ark Tribe affairs, the imprisonment of the Turkish trade union leader) etc.

The Policy document dealt with the housing problems, less allocation of fund for development work, working women and child labour problems, hike in prices of all building materials, migrant labour, neglected health & safety affairs – all related to the construction workers. UITBB report had information how in all continents of the world the construction workers played an important role in observance of solidarity movement.

Two special sessions were arranged in the Congress. One on working women and the other on Migrant Labour.

Delegates from different countries spoke on the policy document and special paper on working women and migrant labour. Comrade Debanjan Chakrabarti and Comrade N. Veeraswamy participated in the discussions.

The Congress adopted 14 resolutions including Abolition of the Building and Construction Industry Improvement Act. 2005 in Australia; Ban on all forms of Asbestos; To ensure occupational health and safety measures at all work sites; Against killing of Trade Union leaders in Colombia; and Protect legally the workers engaged in precarious employment. The Congress adopted the Policy Documents, Accounts and the two Special papers.

The Congress unanimously elected 28 member Executive Committee which includes 7 Members Secretariat. Comrade Debanjan Chakrabarti was elected as one of the Secretariat Members.
