The much touted second largest growing economy in the world is to- day facing mind boggling challenges in all directions. India has acquired a dubious distinction of being a country with one of the largest growing dollar billionaire population. At the same time the World Hunger Report points out India as having the largest hungry inhabitants in the globe. The globalisation of Indian economy has strengthened the corporate sector whose loot of the nation's wealth has resulted in funneling out of the country several lakhs of crores of rupees in foreign banks. According an estimate if all the loot is brought back to India every Indian citizen will get two and a half lakh rupees. Country is observing shocking new disclosures every day but the powers that be are totally unconcerned and shamelessly indulging in cover-up exercise. Their shamelessness is crossing all limits even if WikiLeaks highlight their servility and rotten mentality. The working class of India is the worst victim of all these developments. Growing unemployment and declining real standards of living are making their life miserable. The unprecedented rise in prices of essential commodities has made the matter worse for them. The non-chalant violation of labour laws by the employers and the behaviour of the UPA II Govt. as a silent spectator have made a mockery of the entire labour legislations enacted since independence. The retrograde policies of the UPA Government threaten independent economic development of the country. The drive towards privatisation will only strengthen the grip of the corporate sector and the unholy ganging up of corporate sector, corrupt bureaucrats and bourgeois politicians. It will threaten the living standards of the working class and impose a new form of slavery on them. The remarkable unity achieved by the entire T.U. movement in the country and the massive show of strength reflected in 23rd February demonstration before Parliament will reflect further strength only if the Left movement becomes stronger and challenge the supremacy of the capitalist class.
The electoral politics and the role money played during elections have posed severe challenges for the Left movement. It is only through the development of working class ideology among the workers that the Left movement can effectively meet the challenges of money and muscle power. Unless the working class is liberated from the clutches of the capitalist ideological moorings the Left movement in the country cannot get its desired strength. The rightward shift in the UPA II’s policies and its becoming subservient to USA's aggressive imperialist designs in the world can be effectively fought only by the Left movement. A big conspiracy is under way to marginalise the Left so that the struggle against depredations of the rule of capital can be protected. All anti-left forces have flocked together for this purpose and foreign capital is giving all moral and material support to this venture.
The forthcoming elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Assam are going to be a battle ground for the struggle of policies. The entire capitalist press and media are fully engaged in the disinformation campaign by resorting to all types of falsehoods and misleading propaganda against the Left forces and their allies in the electoral framework. Under these circumstances it is a stupendous task before the working class to realise the character of the present situation and ensure victory of the Left and democratic forces in the elections. Particularly the election in West Bengal and Kerala which are the bulwark of the Left movement have a special significance. The outcome of these elections have far reaching impact on the political situation in the country. The militant trade union movement in the country to-day has to play a crucial role in the electoral battle and should not leave any stone unturned in the struggle against the UPA and NDA allies to achieve electoral victory for the Left and democratic forces in the country.
Let the working class rise to the occasion and meet all the challenges of the present situation!
